Maître dans l'art des innovations harmoniques et de la polyphonie rythmique, le poète du piano jazz Marc Copland est aussi un adepte de l'improvisation collective. Un goût pour ce jazz libre qu'il a exploré dès ses débuts sur les scènes de Philadelphie, en tant que saxophoniste, avec son ami Michael Brecker puis, à New york, avec le guitariste John Abercrombie. En 2016, Marc Copland fonde son propre label, Innervoice Jazz, et sort un album en trio sur lequel il réunit Drew Gress et Joey Baron, ses compagnons de route au sein du quartet du regretté John Abercrombie (Baron & Copland se côtoyaient aussi dans le trio de Gary Peacock). Cette complicité des musiciens, parfaite pour l'univers de Copland, est l’événement de ce début d’année à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte. À presque soixante ans, Marc Copland s'est imposé définitivement comme l'un des pianistes les plus talentueux, originaux et prolifiques du jazz contemporain.
