Quand on écrit sur un trio qui mêle écriture et improvisation, c’est un lieu commun de parler de « complicité », surtout quand les musiciens jouent ensemble depuis 20 ans. Andy Emler parle souvent de la musique comme d’un « voyage ». Avec ce trio, c’est d’autant plus vrai que la matière sonore est constamment en mouvement. Le voyage est autant celui, extérieur, de la musique en mouvement que celui, intérieur, d’une expérience d’écoute synonyme d’ouverture — à soi et au monde. Dans ce nouveau répertoire, on retrouve un useful mélange entre improvisations-paysage, recherches sur le rythme qui flirtent avec la musique contemporaine, et dynamiques hypnotiques ancrées dans une énergie rock.
When one writes about a trio that mixes composition and improvisation, it’s common to speak of “complicity”, especially when the musicians have been playing together for twenty years. Andy also often speaks of music as a “voyage”. With this trio it is all the more true, as the sound matter is always in motion. The voyage is as much external, with the music being in constant motion, as it is internal, with the listening experience being synonymous with openness - to oneself and to the world around. In this new repertoire, we find the useful mix of improvisation-landscape, research on rhythm which flirts with contemporary music and hypnotic dynamics anchored in rock music.
