Unique and multifaceted, Leïla explores her inner realms and unearths the spirits that dwell there. Alone on stage in her nymph’s gown and tangled wreath, a creature at once ancient and playful, a child-clown and a lyrical woman, she brings her worlds together, invoking Bach from the neck of a miniature bottle, celebrating the child she will never have, vibrating on her toy piano to buried memories, switching from French to English and Spanish or even to one of those nonsensical languages known only to her, exploding in swirls of unimaginable, imaginary timbres, all punctuated by comical confessions about the ‘play Bach’ function, tuning instruments to 440 and other topics seized on the fly. Leïla plunges into the whirlpool of emotions with a rare spontaneity. The most sincere contrition often rubs shoulders with the most mischievous derision, as if the two had previously been thought to be antithetical.
