Aventureux, imaginatif et naviguant depuis plus d’un quart de siècle dans le paysage jazzistique français, Matthieu Donarier a souvent joué avec les esthétiques et déjoué les tentatives de classement stylistique. Adepte des formes métriques ou harmoniques sophistiquées comme des chansons populaires, des compositions ciselées comme de l’improvisation libre, il présente pour la première fois le fruit d’un travail en quartet très classique à première vue : saxophone, piano, contrebasse, batterie. Un poncif du jazz ? A fan of sophisticated metric and harmonic forms as well as popular songs, finely crafted compositions and free improvisation, he now presents for the first time the fruit of his work in a quartet that appears very classical at first glance: saxophone, piano, double bass, drums. A jazz cliché? Think again: under the guise of paying tribute to one of his masters, Matthieu Donarier pays homage to the entire history of jazz through an opus that is both clear and spontaneous, imbued with freedom and mutual listening.
