À 40 ans, Robin Verheyen est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs saxophonistes et compositeurs européens, ayant élu domicile à New York et au sein de la communauté musicale américaine. Installé ici depuis 2007, il s’est rapidement forgé une réputation en tant que musicien et compositeur. Il a travaillé avec de grands noms du jazz tels que Gary Peacock, Ralph Alessi, Joey Baron et bien d’autres.
En 2014, il s’est rendu au Sénégal pour s’immerger dans la scène musicale locale, mettant à profit cette expérience dans le cadre d’un processus à long terme visant à associer les rythmes ouest-africains aux harmonies modernistes du compositeur français Olivier Messiaen. Cela illustre bien l’approche musicale transcendant les genres de Verheyen, qui est devenue une caractéristique majeure de son œuvre. En janvier 2018, Verheyen a sorti When the Birds Leave chez Universal Music, avec son quartet composé de Marc Copland, Drew Gress et Billy Hart.
Plus récemment, Verheyen a achevé deux nouvelles œuvres commandées, l’une pour quintette à cordes et saxophone (inspirée en partie par une résidence au centre culturel Thread au Sénégal) et l’autre pour trio à cordes, piano et saxophone (avec le pianiste Marc Copland et le trio à cordes Goeyvaerts), qui a été créée au Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers, où Verheyen est artiste en résidence depuis 2017.
En 2019, Verheyen a sorti l’album MiXMONK dans le cadre de son contrat avec Universal, en collaboration avec le trio coopératif composé de Joey Baron et Bram De Looze, suivi en 2022 par leur deuxième album On The Loose (Curatores/L’autre Distribution).
En 2021, il a sorti The Bach Riddles, une réinterprétation en quatuor de l’Offrande musicale de Bach (WERF Records). En 2023, son album solo pour saxophone soprano Playing the Room est sorti et, plus tard dans l’année, un enregistrement de l’œuvre commandée par le KMSKA sera également publié.
At 40, Robin Verheyen is considered one of the top European saxophone players and composers having made NYC and the US musician’s community his home. Established here since 2007, he quickly built a reputation as a player and composer. He has worked with jazz greats such as Gary Peacock, Ralph Alessi, Joey Baron and many others.
In 2014 he traveled to Senegal to immerse himself in the local music scene, using the experience towards a long-term process of bringing together West African rhythms with the modernistic harmonies of French composer Olivier Messiaen. This is representative of Verheyen’s cross-genre approach to music, something that has become a mainstay in his oeuvre. In January 2018 Verheyen released When the Birds Leave on Universal Music, with his quartet featuring Marc Copland, Drew Gress and Billy Hart.
More recently Verheyen completed two new commissioned works, one for string quintet and saxophone (partly inspired by a residency at the cultural center Thread in Senegal); and a composition for string trio, piano and saxophone (featuring pianist Marc Copland and the Goeyvaerts String trio) that premièred at the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp where Verheyen has been visiting Artist in Residence since 2017.
In 2019 Verheyen released the album MiXMONK on his Universal contract with the co-op trio with Joey Baron and Bram De Looze which was followed by their second album On The Loose (Curatores/L’autre Distribution) in 2022.
In 2021 he released The Bach Riddles, a quartet reworking of Bach’s Musical Offering (WERF Records). In 2023 his solo soprano saxophone album Playing the Room was released and later this year a recording of the commissioned work for the KMSKA will also be published.
