Le projet « Tribute to Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn » rend hommage à Gérard Lockel, guitariste guadeloupéen et créateur du Gwo-ka Modèn.
Issu du gwo-ka traditionnel (tambours, chants et danses de Guadeloupe) le Gwo-ka Modèn marque dès 1969 une rupture et une réinvention. Lockel y associe science musicale, swing, rigueur harmonique modale, atonale et liberté créative. Il a également inventé une gamme asymétrique, qui constitue la base de cette esthétique singulière, symbole identitaire et outil de décolonisation de la pensée musicale.
Sous la direction du pianiste Ruddy Boa, le projet revisite les compositions et les textes de Gérard Lockel autour des sept rythmes du gwo-ka. Les pièces sont réarrangées et harmonisées, modulant tempos, formes et mélodies, tout en respectant l’esprit originel.
Le quintet réunit Körinn Pierre-Fanfan (chant), Dylan Choisi (batterie), Arlet Feuillard (tambour Ka) et Jean-Christophe Raufaste (basse). Ensemble, ils rendent un vibrant hommage à Gérard Lockel, disparu en septembre 2023.
Le concert sera également l’occasion de découvrir le KARUKA, instrument inventé par Ruddy Boa dans le sillage du GWADLOUKA créé par Lockel. Percussion métallique jouée avec des baguettes en bambou, le KARUKA dialogue avec le tambour Ka et la batterie et ouvre un espace d’improvisation où science, swing et souffle du gwo-ka traditionnel se rejoignent.

The “Tribute to Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn” project pays homage to Gérard Lockel, a guitarist from Guadeloupe and creator of Gwo-ka Modèn.
Stemming from traditional gwo-ka (drums, songs, and dances from Guadeloupe), Gwo-ka Modèn marked a break with tradition and a reinvention in 1969. Lockel combined musical science, swing, modal harmonic rigor, atonality, and creative freedom. He also invented an asymmetrical scale, which forms the basis of this unique aesthetic, a symbol of identity and a tool for the decolonization of musical thought.
Under the direction of pianist Ruddy Boa, the project revisits Gérard Lockel’s compositions and lyrics around the seven rhythms of gwo-ka. The pieces are rearranged and harmonized, modulating tempos, forms, and melodies, while respecting the original spirit.
The quintet brings together Körinn Pierre-Fanfan (vocals), Dylan Choisi (drums), Arlet Feuillard (Ka drum), and Jean-Christophe Raufaste (bass). Together, they pay a vibrant tribute to Gérard Lockel, who passed away in September 2023.
The concert will also be an opportunity to discover the KARUKA, an instrument invented by Ruddy Boa in the wake of the GWADLOUKA created by Lockel. A metal percussion instrument played with bamboo sticks, the KARUKA interacts with the Ka drum and the drums, opening up a space for improvisation where science, swing, and the spirit of traditional gwo-ka come together.
